Maria Miller is standing as the Havant Borough Council Liberal Democrat candidate in Bondfields.
I have lived in the borough of Havant for almost 40 years and have raised my family here. I worked as a teacher in the borough for more than 20, at South Downs College and more recently at Havant Campus, HSDC until retiring last summer.
I am standing for election because I believe the Conservatives have taken the people of Havant for granted for too long.
I have seen the effect of the cuts on our area and think it's time for a new approach.
We have seen a rash of new housing in the area, as your councillor I will work to ensure that further development includes genuinely affordable housing for local people, is built to the highest environmental standards and has the necessary infrastructure to support it - from schools to sewage, this must be a priority.
Both my husband and I have spent recent years working with young people and have seen the struggles and impact of COVID first hand. In a time where budgets are tight, I will fight to keep support to help our most vulnerable young people get the experience they need for work and have access to the right youth services.
I’ve been humbled by the response people locally have shown to those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. I will stand up to the heartless Tories and fight for those who are welcomed to Havant to be able to settle properly - to be welcomed to our community and ensure we have the groups and systems in place so they can integrate in our area.
