Cowplain

Your Local Liberal Democrat Champion for Cowplain

This year you have an amazing champion to vote for in Cowplain.

Christian Notley MBE attended School and College in the borough before going on to study furniture making and restoration. After working as a furniture maker & restorer in Hampshire & London, he went on to share his skills and knowledge in the developing world working in a number of colleges and establishing vocational training centers for disabled before returning to the UK.

His experience in the developing world strengthens his belief in the importance of skills training and the importance of creating a fairer society, and he feels is a core element of being a Liberal Democrat.

During his time working overseas, he also studied with the open university, gaining a degree in social science and post graduate diploma in development management.

After many years working overseas, he returned to live in the borough and took up a role lecturing while continuing to promote the value of vocational training.

In 2016, he was awarded an MBE for his work to promote vocational skills training, and he continues to do this in his current job with WorldSkills UK while also enjoying walking and gardening.

All of his experiences working in the developing world and colleges in the UK have demonstrated to him the importance of representation at every level in a democracy to ensure local people's voices & concerns are heard, and his is what he will do for the people in Cowplain and the borough if elected.

Christian Notley's Three Point Plan for Cowplain

1. Stop Aquind

Aquind wish to run new power cables from France to near Lovedean Sub-Station

Imagine many months of traffic upheaval along Eastern Road Portsmouth and London Road (past the allotments) and Hambledon Road whilst an interconnector pipe is installed from Eastney to Lovedean, bringing French energy backed by Russian investors. Russians who have donated £1.5 million to Conservative Party MPs including £1,500 to Alan Mak MP.

The construction would mean many months of disruption and untold damage to the fabric along the route threatening fragile biodiversity along Langstone Harbour. Toxic material long-buried safely in landfill sites might be unearthed, further harming the environment.

The cables carry data which Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt, former Secretary of State for Defence, calls “a considerable threat to national security.” This project is under review for final decision by a Conservative cabinet minister. We fully oppose this project.

2. Putting Residents First

The Liberal Democrats want to represent your views to the council. We have been listening to you on the doorstep all year.

All too often local views are ignored. You have told us that you are concerned about too much development, too much traffic, too few dentists, too long to wait for a GP appointment. You think that all new housing should be fitted with solar panels.

Everyone should have easy access to electric car charging points.

Traffic needs to be slowed, roads should be safer for cyclists, potholes should be fixed, road noise reduced.

The Lib Dem team have raised these points with the relevant authorities throughout the last year and will continue to do so.

Through the Lib Dem team, your voices will be heard at council.

3. Improve Local Parks

Drainage and children's play areas in many of our local parks needs to be improved.

Many of our local parks are in need of some work to improve the facilities for the family and pets to use.

The children’s play areas are in need of repair in many of our local parks. Your Lib Dem team will work hard to improve the funding so this much needed work can be brought forward for the parks in our area.

Your Lib Dem team will also work to see better measures taken to prevent unwanted vehicular access, whilst also encouraging those with mobility issues and cyclists to use the parks.
