Leigh Park Hermitage

Your Local Liberal Democrat Champion for Leigh Park Hermitage

This year you have an exceptional local Lib Dem champion for Leigh Park Hermitage.

Maria Miller is standing as the Havant Borough Council Liberal Democrat candidate in Leigh Park Hermitage.

Havant Borough is Maria’s adopted home – She and her husband have lived here for almost 40 years. Her children thrived at fantastic schools in the borough and she has taught many children locally having taught for more than 20 years at South Downs College.

Recently retired, Maria now wants to continue to be a part of the community. She believes the Conservatives have taken Havant for granted for too long, and when she was teaching, she saw the impact of decisions by the local and national Conservatives first hand.

Like many local residents, Maria is angry about how Southern Water has allowed to ruin our beautiful coastline and has pumped so much sewage into the area that both Langstone and Chichester Harbours are now unsafe for swimmers and surfers. Now even our drinking water is at risk.

As your local councillor Maria will work as a part of the Lib Dem group and hold the local Tories, including our MP, to account on this.

Maria has joined with local residents to ensure our voices are heard about how Southern Water is ruining our area and threatening the environment. If elected, Maria will continue to do this as your local councillor.

We need a strong voice locally, not just another Tory who will say “yes”. Our local services have been cut to the bone and development is happening in the wrong place, without enough affordable homes for local families, without quality roads, Doctors’ surgeries and schools we need to support it.

Maria will fight for you. To make sure the roads are properly looked after and that our council tax is being used on the right things, to help keep Leigh Park Hermitage a special place to live.

Maria Miller's Three Point Plan for Leigh Park Hermitage

1. Work to reduce disruption

Portsmouth Water plan to build new pipes to carry fresh water from the Havant Thicket Reservoir, cutting through Leigh Park. Little consideration had been made to the residents of Havant for the disruption this would cause.

Portsmouth Water have had consultations about their plans to build the pipeline from the Havant Thicket through Leigh Park and Bedhampton so that the water can be processed at the existing treatment plant off West Street. Until it was raised with them, there hadn't been much input into reducing the impact on the local people. The route of the pipeline will take it across our road network and cause major disruption with roads being temporarily closed.

Liberal Democrats in Havant have been working to ensure that Portsmouth Water's plans take into account any road closures and other issues in their plans, so as to keep such disruptions to a minimum. By being an elected councillor, this will give the Lib Dem team more influence in order to get this important topic right for the people in Leigh Park.

2. Putting Residents First

The Liberal Democrats want to represent your views to the council. We have been listening to you on the doorstep all year.

All too often local views have been ignored. You have told us that you are concerned about too much development, too much traffic, too few dentists, too long to wait for a GP appointment. You think that all new housing should be fitted with solar panels.

Everyone should have easy access to electric car charging points.

Traffic needs to be slowed, roads should be safer for cyclists, potholes should be fixed, road noise reduced.

Your Lib Dem team have raised these points with the relevant authorities throughout the year and will continue to do so.

3. Work with the companies who own the shopping centre

Our shops across the ward are in need of investment and work to increase the number of people visiting

The shopping centre in The Warren is in much need of investment. The Lib Dem team very much like to work with the owners, through the council, to increase the number of visitors and amount of shopping done.

Whilst much work has been made over the years to open more shops in the Leigh Park shopping centre, we'd like to see more work done in our shopping area too, along with the shops elsewhere in our area.

By working with all interested parties, we'd love to see more shops opening. This will improve local trade and investment, not only in our shops, but also for employment.
