MEET YOUR LOCAL CHAMPIONS

Antonia Harrison believes in fairness and balance in local politics for local people, with cross-party representation. The Conservatives have virtually had a monopoly on running Havant Borough Council and monopoly breeds complacency. Any organization benefits from a mixture of views. Politics is relevant to our everyday lives and choosing the right person to represent us can really make a difference

As a Liberal Democrat, she is concerned about environmental matters including improved recycling in the Borough e.g. kerbside collections of glass and food waste plus stopping the sewage being pumped from Budd’s Farm by Southern Water into Langstone Harbour.

Exasperated with the decline in Waterlooville Town Centre, she wants real action, not talk. The Liberal Democrat Councillors in neighbouring Portsmouth and Winchester bring real value and improvement to residents rather than status quo and complacency.

As a private mental health therapist, Antonia helps clients with psychological issues, anxiety, addictions, unwanted behaviours, phobias and lack of confidence. She works part-time in parish administration for local churches.

The Liberal Democrats’ policy of parity treatment for mental health issues was a key reason for Antonia wanting to seek election.

She worries about work and housing prospects, especially for the young and disabled and wants higher standards of education in local schools with a wider range of apprenticeships and further education choices throughout life. Financial education will help young people avoid bad financial choices leading to cumulative debt.

Antonia moved to Portsmouth in 2012 and Purbrook in 2015 after working 16 years in Belgium and Spain. Her children were educated at Purbrook Park School and HSDC.

George has lived in the local area for seven years, having moved here from Newbury, West Berkshire with his wife, Christine and youngest son, Caleb. In Newbury, George led a full life where he was a Councillor, School Governor, local businessman and Officer-in-charge of the Newbury and District Sea Cadets. His wife worked with disabled children and together they fostered for 15 years. He helped to start Young People and Children First, a charity housing young people, many of whom were fostered, and providing access to training and life skills.

George, Christine and Caleb moved to Waterlooville to enable his daughter to help look after Christine. Despite a brief spell when she felt well enough to work as a School Escort, she died in November 2022 after a battle with cancer and he is now in a position of being able to dedicate his time to the local community and is looking to join local community organisations.

George, an electronics engineer, is working as a Costings Engineer for a company in Bordon. Having been a busy man, he has not had much time for hobbies but is more likely to be doing DIY, reading a book or doing his favourite type of quiz, Sudoku.

We are proud that Paul Tansom will be standing as the Liberal Democrats champion for our area. He has lived in Purbrook all his life, and knows the area very well. He loves sailing, and contributes to this sport as Secretary of the Portsmouth & Langstone Sailing Assn, and is their representative on the Langstone Harbour Board, helping to keep the Harbour safe and conserve the natural environment.

As a keen supporter of Repair, Reuse and Recycle, Paul also volunteers at the monthly Repair Café Havant, helping residents restore their precious possessions.

Paul continues to live with his family in Purbrook, after becoming established in a career in IT. Paul volunteered to be a Governor of both Morelands Primary School and Purbrook Park School. He is passionate about giving our children the best possible start in life. Paul was the primary carer for his dad who was in need of care. As his primary carer, Paul gained much experience of the many challenges in the damaged Social Care system that many are also facing.

Paul says: “I have always used my skills to help my community, and know our area needs stronger voices here all year round to really get results. Please back the local Lib Dems fighting for our area”
